About the event
An Atlantic Drift makes and unmakes paths through the arts of the 20th century, framed more specifically within the time span from 1909 to 1977, seeking to unsettle received ideas and established canons by summoning references and artistic forms usually kept apart. It follows an inconstant chronology, with detours and temporal leaps, showing connections and confrontations between the European and American shores to point to possible relations and drifts sometimes forgotten or absent from art history. The Atlantic, especially from the mid-20th century onwards, becomes a fundamental space of transit and exile, giving rise to new geopolitical affinities that shape modern subjectivities with repercussions to the present day. As a rehang of the permanent collection, An Atlantic Drift presents a selection of Portuguese and international artists, across painting, sculpture, drawing, installation and graphic arts, which trace art in the history of the world and show modernity as the multiple eruption of major social, artistic and technological transformations. From Pablo Picasso to Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso, from Lourdes de Castro to Marcel Duchamp, from Andy Warhol to Wifredo Lam, from Maria Helena Vieira da Silva to Joaquín Torres-García, from Jackson Pollock to Malangatana, and from Lucio Fontana to Ana Hatherly, a total of around 160 artists, the exhibition presents a series of chapters that reveal the complexities of historical and artistic development in the 20th century. Marked by two World Wars in Europe and their consequences through to the processes of revolution and decolonisation in the 1970s, this time span also proves permeable to transformation and can be rethought in new paths. As a permanent exhibition in permanent transformation, An Atlantic Drift presents for the first time the collections on loan at MAC/CCB — mainly the Berardo Collection, but also the Holma/Ellipse Collection, the Teixeira de Freitas Collection and the State Contemporary Art Collection — also integrating loans from collections in Portugal that also allow the place of Portuguese art in the arts of the 20th century to be redrawn. The exhibition texts are written by different authors from distinct disciplines and geographical contexts. In the case of Brazilian Portuguese, the original spelling is maintained. Pre- and post-AO90 spellings have also been respected. Curated by Nuria Enguita (artistic director MAC/CCB) and Marta Mestre (curator MAC/CCB) Scientific advice by Mariana Pinto dos Santos ◾ Course An Atlantic Journey through Modern Art Saturdays, 17 and 31 October, 07, 14, 21 and 28 November, 10:00 am to 1:00 pm What possibilities does telling the history of Modern art from the Atlantic bring us? Guided by the idea of detour, this course brings into debate authors, journeys and interfaces that textbooks barely address but which the exhibition "An Atlantic Drift. The Arts of the 20th Century from the Berardo Collection" allows us to explore. Countering the idea of a single reading, advocating multiple possibilities of travel; the course is in-person, with six guided sessions, between the exhibition space and the auditorium. Coordination Cristina Gameiro / Conception and guidance Fabrícia Valente Price: €95/person / Registration until 9 October Exhibition visits
