DESCRIPTION:An Atlantic Drift makes and unmakes paths through the arts of
the 20th century\, framed more specifically within the time span from 1909
to 1977\, seeking to unsettle received ideas and established canons by su
mmoning references and artistic forms usually kept apart. It follows an in
constant chronology\, with detours and temporal leaps\, showing connection
s and confrontations between the European and American shores to point to
possible relations and drifts sometimes forgotten or absent from art histo
ry. The Atlantic\, especially from the mid-20th century onwards\, becomes
a fundamental space of transit and exile\, giving rise to new geopolitical
affinities that shape modern subjectivities with repercussions to the pre
sent day. As a rehang of the permanent collection\, An Atlantic Drift pres
ents a selection of Portuguese and international artists\, across painting
 \, sculpture\, drawing\, installation and graphic arts\, which trace art i
n the history of the world and show modernity as the multiple eruption of
major social\, artistic and technological transformations. From Pablo Pica
sso to Amadeo de Souza-Cardoso\, from Lourdes de Castro to Marcel Duchamp\
, from Andy Warhol to Wifredo Lam\, from Maria Helena Vieira da Silva to J
oaquín Torres-García\, from Jackson Pollock to Malangatana\, and from Lu
cio Fontana to Ana Hatherly\, a total of around 160 artists\, the exhibiti
on presents a series of chapters that reveal the complexities of historica
l and artistic development in the 20th century. Marked by two World Wars i
n Europe and their consequences through to the processes of revolution and
decolonisation in the 1970s\, this time span also proves permeable to tra
nsformation and can be rethought in new paths. As a permanent exhibition i
n permanent transformation\, An Atlantic Drift presents for the first time
the collections on loan at MAC/CCB — mainly the Berardo Collection\, bu
t also the Holma/Ellipse Collection\, the Teixeira de Freitas Collection a
nd the State Contemporary Art Collection — also integrating loans from c
ollections in Portugal that also allow the place of Portuguese art in the
arts of the 20th century to be redrawn. The exhibition texts are written b
y different authors from distinct disciplines and geographical contexts. I
n the case of Brazilian Portuguese\, the original spelling is maintained.
Pre- and post-AO90 spellings have also been respected. Curated by Nuria En

As a permanent exhibition i

arts of the 20th century to be redrawn. The exhibition texts are written b

As a permanent exhibition i

the collections on loan at MAC/CCB — mainly the Berardo Collection\, bu
t also the Holma/Ellipse Collection\, the Teixeira de Freitas Collection a
nd the State Contemporary Art Collection — also integrating loans from c
ollections in Portugal that also allow the place of Portuguese art in the
arts of the 20th century to be redrawn. The exhibition texts are written b
y different authors from distinct disciplines and geographical contexts. I
n the case of Brazilian Portuguese\, the original spelling is maintained.

As a permanent exhibition i

arts of the 20th century to be redrawn. The exhibition texts are written b
