On Others

About the event

There are others in our lives — this series starts from that fact. Over six sessions, António de Castro Caeiro proposes to explore the different figures of this «being with others», through a set of questions about our relationship with them. How do we draw closer to and distance ourselves from one another? Friendship confronts us with an «other self»; love allows two different people to share the same affective atmosphere; family, whether restricted or extended, presents itself as a first community. How do we experience the presence of those we call «ours»? The reflection also extends to the recognition of the other as an enemy and to the possibility of finding affinities in the midst of hatred. Intersubjectivity grounds any relationship with others, even when there is no empathy. With Plato, Aristotle, Descartes, Kant, Hegel, Husserl, Heidegger and Arendt, among others, the series places a paradox at the centre of the reflection. How can each person carry all of humanity within them and, at the same time, live in the most complete solitude?
