Beyond the Apocalypse: In Search of Answers

Starting from a confidence in the human capacity to find answers to the existential challenges that life on Earth faces, this series opens a discussion about our common future. Brutalist currents fuel nationalism, weaken critical thinking, put democracy at risk and make environmental and nuclear apocalypse an increasingly less unthinkable possibility. At the same time, among citizens, awareness of our common humanity and the desire to participate in public life is growing. It is to these voices that the series seeks to give space, through the format of citizen debate. Each session will be opened by commissioner Álvaro Vasconcelos, who will use short films or film excerpts to frame the theme of each debate within the broader imaginary of apocalyptic cinema. Afterwards, a facilitator will pose questions to the invited specialists and encourage audience participation. Each debate will be built from the questions, concerns and points of view of those who take part in it.
