Echoes and Shadows of the Portuguese Royal Chapel

About the event

This programme proposes a listening experience of the sound and devotional universe of the Passion of Christ, as we might imagine it in the context of the 16th-century Portuguese Royal Chapel: at its centre, the Chyrios das Trevas, the oldest polyphonic work with an unequivocal origin in the Portuguese Royal Chapel (c. 1500), preserved as an appendix to a Ceremonial of the Royal Chapel once belonging to Infanta D. Maria and now kept at the National Library of Naples. In dialogue with this central work, Iberian motets will be heard, offering a complementary perspective on the circulation of repertoires through manuscript sources, such as CIC 60 at the National Library of Lisbon. The concert takes place in a dimly lit environment evoking the liturgy of darkness of the Easter Triduum. Pre-concert talk by Pedro Sousa Silva at 7:30 PM. El Corte Inglés supports the CCB Classical Music Mediation Programme.
