About the event
Protected from all suffering, Siddhartha sees his life defined from the start. However, an inner voice leads him to set out in search of another destiny. Along his journey, he confronts different experiences until he finds meaning in the contradictions of human existence. The character created by Hermann Hesse does not correspond to the historical Buddha, but rather to a man crossed by doubts, fragilities and desires. With Hesse's novel in her pocket, Lisaboa Houbrechts, one of the most relevant directors on the contemporary international scene, found herself in India during the pandemic. In her adaptation of Siddhartha, she builds a scenic polyphony that brings arts and cultures together, reinvents characters and questions gender roles. The protagonist is played by singer and composer Meskerem Mees. Structured around the music of composer Caroline Shaw, performed by a 24-member choir, SIDDHARTHA crosses theater, classical singing, pop improvisation, Sufi songs and Indian dance, composing a performative universe marked by the diversity of languages and references. Accessibility: Performance with Audio Description on January 31, at 5:00 PM.
