Beethoven's "Ghost" Trio

The Piano, Violin, and Cello Trios, Op. 11 and Op. 70, No. 1, reveal two very distinct moments in Beethoven's creative journey. Separated by a decade, these works bear witness to the transformation of a young composer who assimilated the conventions of his time into a creator capable of expanding the limits of musical language. In the Trio Op. 11, known as "Gassenhauer," Beethoven starts from a popular melody to build a work marked by elegance, humor, and virtuosity. The Trio Op. 70, No. 1, nicknamed "Ghost," explores more intense and unsettling expressive territories, anticipating some of the characteristics that would come to mark 19th-century Romanticism. Placed side by side, these two trios offer a portrait of Beethoven's extraordinary capacity for reinvention and invite us to follow the evolution of one of the most influential voices in the history of music.
