DESCRIPTION:Beyond the popular myths surrounding the figure of Beethoven a
 nd the monumentality of his music\, it is worth remembering that he inspir
 es many and varied moods. He himself had an unpredictable temperament\, so
 metimes caustic or depressive\, sometimes magnanimous or affectionate\, so
 metimes mocking or playful. In this Carnival Concert\, conductor Henrique 
 Constância and the Orquestra Metropolitana de Lisboa explore this last fa
 cet. Among other pieces\, they recall the ticking of the metronome in the 
 Eighth and the famous four notes that open the Fifth (said to represent fa
 te knocking at the door). They also play Beethoven's Fifth by Walter Murph
 y\; and the pun with the "fifth of gallon"\, a traditional unit of measure
 ment in the USA for alcoholic beverages\, should not go unnoticed. And als
 o a musical parody of the nine symphonies by Louis Andriessen\, for orches
 tra … and ice cream vendor's bell. Pre-concert talk by Rui Campos Leitã
